I recently wrote about one of the few reasons I do like being in Florida, and that was being able to go out and catch rocket launches out at Cape Canaveral, FL. But there are several other reasons as well. Recently, my wife encountered one of these reasons in the form of one of our neighborhood black bears. Now I love nature, and really love the animals that live in our woods, but bears are by far and away my favorite. I think they are beautiful and powerful animals that are to be appreciated and respected.
We actually see these amazing animals semi-often because we basically live within about a half mile of two major river systems and the forest that lay in-between them. This forest is all part of the Black Bear Wilderness Area and it all literally backs up to the back of my neighborhood. As such, we get these awesome visitors every now and again. The problem is, people move here completely ignorant to the fact of these bears OR how to properly live in harmony with them. One of the biggest problems is people repeatedly leaving their food trash out the night before pickup. I get it, the trash guy comes early, but the bears come through at night, as is their wont to do, and feast. This of course leaves a trail of trash in their wake.
The end result is neighbors who want the bear removed (Um, you moved next to a bear preserve, they were here first), and bears who have lost their fear of people almost entirely. That is a bad combination which has ultimately led to attacks recently by people not taking proper precautions. You use to never hear of bear attacks. When I first moved here a decade ago, the bears would run the moment they saw you. Now, the will just stare at you while continue to feast on the trash put out too early.
Okay, enough venting, I do think it is wonderful that we get to see these awesome animals like the one in this video.
